Jump ahead on the learning curve and build your career prospects by attending this extraordinary PUBLIC RELATIONS WORLD CONGRESS 2000 filled with the issues we care about, the leaders we admire and the opportunities to hone professional skills.

Message From The Co-Chairs

Whatever corner of the world you call home, we invite you to attend the Public Relations World Congress 2000. The Public Relations Society of America and the International Public Relations Association are proud to be partners in what may be the largest (from 20 different countries) -- and most important -- gathering of communications professionals in history.

Here we will take a global view of issues we care about, and which will not be resolved without the engagement of communications professionals. The keynote speakers will stimulate and shake our thinking. The rich mix of professional development sessions will help us meet exploding worldwide demands for public relations skills and management. And the networking opportunities will let us make friends with like-minded professionals across many industries, cultures and countries.

Come to Chicago. We'll see you there!

What to Wear
The recommended attire for most World Congress General Sessions and Professional Development Workshops is "business casual." Most of the time there is no need for men to wear suits and ties or for women to wear suits, skirts and high-heel shoes. In order to feature the international flavor of this World Congress, people are encouraged to "Dress to Celebrate" at Sunday's General Session, the Opening Night Reception and the International Dinner. We encourage the wearing of international costumes and native dress to these events. The Closing Night Gala on Tuesday evening at the Shedd Aquarium is informal. Check the descriptions of the Monday evening Section Social Events to determine appropriate attire, as it may vary by Section.

Finding the "Cream of the Crop":
How Workshops are Chosen

This year, members of the World Congress 2000 Committee definitely had their work cut out for them. More than 200 proposals were received and the over 70 presentations selected represent those topics which best meet your educational needs.

In January, a Call for Presentations was mailed to worldwide communications professionals practicing in the corporate arena and in counseling firms, as well as other selected lists of professionals outside the direct practice of public relations. Management consultants, CEOs, CFOs, social scientists, media professionals, and research and development practitioners were among those solicited. PR Tactics carried an advertisement announcing the Call for Presentations.

Next, members of a World Congress 2000 subcommittee reviewed the proposals and selected presentations based on the following criteria:

  • overall quality
  • relevance to the practice of public relations
  • worldwide focus
  • practical application

Once all presentations were reviewed and workshops selected by the Committee, announcement letters were sent to all those who submitted proposals. World Congress programming was based on workshops resulting from this Call for Presentations.

What is the end product of this process?

World Congress 2000 offers you unparalleled professional development opportunities for today's profession, you, and your career.

CyberCafe Bigger and Better

Back by popular demand, the CyberCafe will be expanded and enhanced in Chicago. Sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co., the CyberCafe again will be a place to grab some refreshments and a comfortable chair to relax, recharge or meet others. It also will be a central location to get info on Chicago and check your e-mail back home. Planned this year is an online survey of issues important to the profession with responses instantly tabulated and shown in the Living History of Public Relations Exhibit nearby. You'll find both the CyberCafe and the History Exhibit in the Hyatt's Wacker Exhibit Hall. Whether you use one of our computers or bring your own you're always welcome in the CyberCafe.
